When heavy rains arrive, sump pumps can mean the difference between a dry basement and serious property damage.

Sump pumps should be discharged onto grassy areas and hoses should not cross sidewalks or streets, or otherwise impede vehicle or pedestrian traffic.  Care should also be taken not to discharge water toward neighboring properties.  Sump pumps may not be discharged to the sanitary system (toilets, sinks, showers, and floor drains in your homes) according to City ordinances.

The sanitary sewer system is designed specifically to carry domestic and industrial wastewater and is operated separately from the storm sewer system. The storm sewer system, however, is designed to carry the runoff of storm water and is better designed to handle increased capacity.

Discharging sump pumps outdoors into the storm water system reduces the treatment costs and the potential for problems within the system itself.
