Welcome to the Yankton Police Department.

police_patch_smallYankton is located in the southeastern corner of South Dakota on the Missouri River and is known as the "Mother City of the Dakotas." Yankton was the first capitol of the Dakota Territory from 1861-1883.

Yankton is a city of 15,411 residents, according to the 2020 Census. The department's structure consists of a Chief of Police, 2 Commanders, 2 Detectives, 5 Sergeants, 17 Patrol Officers, 1 Canine, 1, Community Service Officer, and 1 Support Services Staff.

The Yankton Police Department is proactive and is involved with extensive training for members of the department and the community as well. We offer community education programs such as D.A.R.E., Safety City, Citizen's Academy, and various other applications for educating our children and adult members of our community. The Yankton Police Department remains committed to partnering with the community to create a safe and welcoming environment.

The department is based out of the Yankton County Courts and Safety Center building, 410 Walnut Street.
