The City of Yankton has adopted strategy to reduce breeding opportunities by eliminating standing water through proper drainage, applying larvicide to standing water on City owned property, and utilize fogging for adult mosquitos when traps indicate treatment is appropriate.  Traps located throughout the community are used to monitor the population and establish a threshold to begin treatment.  Treatment efforts are targeted at the species of mosquitos most likely to be disease carriers.  Are all mosquitos the same? 

When adult control occurs, truck-mounted fogging units apply insecticides at very low volumes in the evening hours when the disease carrying varieties of mosquitoes are most active.  The fog primarily targets flying mosquitoes, which is why the timing is important.  Staff members who operate the equipment are licensed pesticide applicators, applying the approved products according to the label directions.  Fogging events are announced via local media outlets.

All residents can help reduce mosquito populations by proactively eliminating breeding areas.  Several simple steps below can reduce the risk of disease spread and make everyone’s time outdoors more enjoyable

• Properly dispose of unwanted containers (tires, buckets, cans, etc.)
• Change water in birdbaths and wading pools frequently.
• Maintain rain gutters to eliminate standing water.
• Remove any debris (plastic containers, wrappers, cups, soda cans, etc.) that may be hidden behind bushes or shrubs in your yard that might hold water.
• Empty toys or flower pots that might be holding water.
• Drain swimming pools covers and water-proof tarps of any standing water.
